Why do we celebrate Father's Day?

Father’s Day, celebrated on June 15, 2025, is a cherished opportunity to honor the invaluable contributions of fathers worldwide. Originating in 1910 through Sonora Smart Dodd’s heartfelt tribute to her father, William Jackson Smart, a devoted Civil War veteran and single parent, this meaningful holiday is now celebrated on the third Sunday in June in nearly 80 countries, including Canada, Vietnam, and Australia.

This Father’s Day highlights the evolving role of fathers as nurturing providers and inspiring role models. U.S. Census data shows that 20% of single-parent households are now led by fathers, up from 14% in 1960. Among these fathers, 89% are separated, divorced, widowed, or never married, while 11% are cohabiting. Society values fathers for instilling values, offering emotional support, providing discipline, and ensuring financial stability.

Research underscores the profound impact of engaged fathers, with children demonstrating stronger academic performance and socio-economic success. Fathers also shape financial behaviors, with daughters learning money management and relationship skills and sons emulating budgeting and investment habits.

As we celebrate Father’s Day, let’s honor the dads who shape our lives with love, guidance, and foresight.  Here’s to fathers—may their legacy of care and commitment shine brightly on June 15 and beyond!
